How to tie your running shoes

Alright so I was at a snails pace running shop yesterday with my parents. Well while i was there this guy next to me was talking to the lady that worked there and asked what are those holes for??

Well I have always wondered the same thing what are these second holes for??

So she explained what to do...
here is the best way i could describe it...

1. take the laces and put the same side lace into the hole from the outside to the inside.
2. make it into a loop don't pull it all the way through
3. take the other side's lace and put it through the loop. do the same on the other side.
4. Then pull them tight. They should look somewhat like this.
5. Then tie it like normal...

So here is what happens... The shoe laces tied this way should make the laces pull from lower back on the foot. The should stay on better, fit better, and be tighter.

I was amazed by the different feel that it gave.

Long Time

So I know it's been a long time since I have posted anything!

I have done a lot of research the last few months but not on anything exciting. I have only researched for my school papers so I you want to know about rape, divorce, traumatized families and rape drugs i could totally post those other wise I am leaving on a Cruise on Sunday and will post a week or so from then when I get back!

Déjà vu

Have you ever walked into a store that you have never been in before and thought i know i have been here before?? That eerie feeling that you have done that exact thing before even though you know you haven't?

Well than you are part of the approximately 70% of the population that has experienced Deja Vu. A higher number of incidents occurs in people 15 to 25 years old than in any other age group.

It's such a weird experience and i thought that would be an interesting thing to find out about!

Well there are quite a few theories on what exactly Deja Vu is and why it happens.

1. reincarnation:
Some people believe that you have actually been there in another life! i don't understand how that exactly would work for say a conversation. When you feel like you have actually been in that conversation before. So FAIL!

2. Psychic:
Some people think that this is just the proof of people being psychic. Well i don't think that 70% of the population is psychic if that was true. And there is just not very much support for this theory at all.

3. Temporal Lobe epilepsy:
Reportedly, deja vu can occur just prior to a temporal-lobe seizure. Now this sounds a little more like it would fit but again 70% of the population does not have temporal lobe seizures. There would be many other factors and problems that would occur in your body if that was the case! However i do think that if you do have temporal lobe seizures this could be a warning sign or a symptom.

4. Eye delay:
This is also closer to believable but not quite fully believable. Basically it is when one eye sees it and the other eye has a delayed response sending it to the brain. Well then what happens to all the other senses? typically deja vu can use all of your senses from the taste to the smell and feel of things.

This theory is much like the eye delay theory except it would involve all of your senses. The temporal lobe of the brain's left hemisphere is responsible for sorting information as it comes in. This temporal lobe actually receives this incoming information twice with a slight (milliseconds-long) delay between transmissions (once directly and once again after its detour through the right hemisphere of the brain.) If that second transmission is delayed slightly longer, the brain might put the wrong timestamp on that bit of information and register it as a previous memory because it had already been processed. Basically your left brain sends it to your right brain and then sends it back to the left. while in the right side it tells you whether it's a memory or familiar. So like do i like the taste of this or not. If there is a delay in any part of this process (which is a very quick process) then you might have the feeling that you have deja vu

In all it would mean that your brain is slow.

Camera obscura what??

Ok so this is my current obsession

But it is so cool! it's called camera obscura...

Basically it's a pin hole effect the outside projects inside through a pin hole. it's so cool! it's really hard to explain though but if you go watch these youtube videos it explains it and you can see it much better!

Why does ice cream hurt??

Alright You know that feeling when you are eating ice cream or drinking a Slurpee and your brain suddenly feels like it's going to explode and you want to die... or maybe you at least know some one that has experienced it well that is a brain freeze! although some people experience back freezes instead

The scientific name for it is:

sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia (meaning "nerve pain of the sphenopalatine ganglion"),

Brain freezes occur when you are eating ice cream or something really cold and it goes against the roof of your mouth before you swallow it. There is a nerve ending located in the center of your palate(roof of your mouth) called the sphenopalatine nerve when that rapidly gets cooled it sends a signal to your brain that tries to over compensate to cool the brain and therefore causing a dilation of blood vessels in the head.

Basically your brain quickly tries to cool itself down and cause that pain.

They are much more common when the weather is warm than when it's cold because of the sudden change in temperature.

One third of all people are statistically susceptible to brain freezes

And an estimated 30 percent of the population experiences Brain Freeze sometime in their life

although i think these numbers are probably higher since i know a lot of people that experience them.

Here are some suggestions on how to relieve a brain freeze:

1. The quickest way is to take a drink of warm water and hold it against the roof of your mouth.

2. The next best thing to do is press your tongue against the roof of your mouth to rewarm the nerve

3. Rub the Back of Your neck (i don't think that one would really work)

4. Use Your Warm Breath: cup your hand over your mouth and nose. Then, breathe in and out quickly through your mouth. Your warm breathe will help warm the nerves above the roof of your mouth.

Some people like my sister experience a back freeze. I researched it a lot and even asked cha cha and didn't really get any reliable information. The only thing that i can think is that the blood stream would also have a quick change in temperature and there for as it runs down your back "freezes" it. Or that the same experience that you get when you drink something really hot and you can feel it as it goes down your esophagus and stuff you can feel that. Sorry Sera there is just not much info on back freezes yet!

math problem answered...

Alright so some of you may remember on January 27 i posted a math problem that i could not figure out well... i asked cha cha finally because it was still bothering me and while i don't know how to do the problem i now have the answer! so at least that's better than nothing!!!

here's the question

30% acid mixes with 10% acid to make a acid mix of 500ml of 25%acid! how much of the 30% acid was used in the mixture?

the answer is... 300ml hopefully that's right not that i would know! man i feel dumb!

Why fingers get pruny in water?

I have always wondered that... haven't you?

so i figured it would be a good thing to research!! I do have to say i am quite behind on these blogs i have a few that i have not yet researched and have been meaning to! since it is snowing to much today maybe i can get a few of them done!

It happens happen when your skin soaks up water. Our skin has a kind of waterproof oil on it called sebum. If you spend too much time in the water, the sebum washes away and you're not so waterproof anymore. Your skin soaks up the water causing it to swell in some places which makes it look wrinkly. The skin is tied down to the tissue underneath in certain places. So when the skin is full of water, it swells up (gets puffy), but only in places where it is not tied down, which makes it look wrinkly.

So it's skin swelling and absorbing water!! interesting!!

This only happens on your toes and fingers because they don't have any hair. The hair follicles on the rest of your body are able to keep making enough sebum so it doesn't wash away.

Did you know?

in order to tell if an egg has gone rotten without cracking it open and exposing the horrible smell you can put it in a glass of water?

if you put it in the water and it lays on it's side it is still fresh

if it is pointing up it means it is older

if it floats (yes floats) then it is bad

interesting....

an egg (fresh) will also float in salt water so try this...

take a glass and fill it half full of salt water then carefully pour plain tap water into the glass being careful not to mix the two the egg will sink through the tap water and then stop at the salt water so it will be suspended in the middle of the glass awesome!!!

so i thought because it is Friday the 13th i would do a post on Friday the 13th!

I never really understood why the number 13 was supposedly "bad" or Friday the 13th was an unlucky day so i thought hm good thing to look up!

well Friday the 13th can either be associated with a lucky day or an unlucky day! It can occur once to 3 times in a year.

The number 13 is said to be irregular because it follows in numerology 12 the number of completeness.

one superstition says that if you have 13 people seated around a table for dinner it will result in the death of one of the diners. this came from the last supper and Norse myths. Superstitious diners in Paris can hire a quatorzieme, or professional 14th guest.

And for some reason Friday is considered an unlucky day. black Friday when the stock market crashed, some say it is because Jesus was supposedly crucified on a Friday, and other such disasters since the 1800s that have occurred on Fridays.

Here is one myth behind it: Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and

fertility. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches, plus the devil - a gathering of thirteen - and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as "Witches' Sabbath.

Many hospitals have no room 13, some tall buildings skip the 13th floor and some airline terminals skip Gate 13.

After all the research that i did on Friday the 13th some studies show that it is one of the safest days of the year (because a lot of people stay home and do nothing therefore are off the roads) or it has the most accidents of the year (mostly in women because they are afraid and therefore psych themselves out)

Honestly it is just another day nothing to exciting or scary! most people do not even notice that it is Friday the 13th! however a black cat did run across the road in front of me last night maybe i should be careful today :)

So I have always wondered what the phrase spick and span meant exactly and where it came from!?

The dictionary definition for spick and span is: Immaculately clean, spotless, Brand-new, fresh

spick: a side of bacon, a floret of lavender, a nail or spike, a thatching spar.

span: the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger, a measure of butter, a fetter or chain, a chip of wood

It's a very old phrase it was used in Sir Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's Lives of the noble Grecians and Romanes, 1579 That's a long time ago!!

One possible understanding of the phrase is spick is a variant of spike or nail In the 16th century nails were made of iron and therefore tarnished quickly new nails then would have been associated with cleanliness. Span comes from that chips of wood have the same fresh, sharp-edged qualities

there isn't much information on this phrase online so dumb

but hope this makes sense and you find it as interesting as i did!

Hiccups

A hiccup is a spasm of the diaphragm the sound is made by the air rushing across your vocal chords.

The main cause for hiccups is eating to fast although no one really knows exactly what causes it here is a list of some possible causes

Jaywalking?

So Brittney asked me to research jaywalking and why it is called jaywalking! i was always curious on that one too so i figured it would be a good one! so i did some research

The definition of jaywalking is: to cross a street carelessly or in an illegal manner so as to be endangered by traffic

I found a few different reasons that it was called jaywalking is "jay" refers to a foolish rural person—a rube—unfamiliar with city ways A ‘jay’ was a hayseed, out of place in the city; a jaywalker was someone who did not know how to walk in a city. Originally the term applied as much or more to pedestrians who obstructed the path of other pedestrians—by failing, for example, to keep to the right on the sidewalk.

There were multiple attempts to stop jaywalking from happening one of my favorites was:

in Detroit in 1922, where the Packard Motor Car Company exploited the new fashion for monuments to traffic fatalities. Packard built an oversize imitation tombstone that closely resembled the monument to the innocent child victims of accidents in Baltimore. But Packard’s tombstone redirected blame to the victims. It was marked ‘Erected to the Memory of Mr. J. Walker: He Stepped from the Curb Without Looking.’

So random information: while i was in traffic school my instructor (a retired highway patrol) said that it is considered jaywalking if you walk across a street between 2 controlled intersections. meaning that if there is a street between to intersections with traffic lights or a cop directing traffic it is not considered jaywalking to walk across the street and where between them. However if there is only 2 streets with controlled intersections it is illegal to walk across the street anywhere between the intersections. if there is a non controlled intersection between the 2 controlled intersections if you walk just outside of the crosswalk you are within legal rights to do that while walking in the crosswalk against a red would be illegal.

So now you know how to cheat the system! :) but just because it isn't against the law does not mean that you should do it or that it is safe so be careful!

ketchup vs catsup

ok so when i was in Jr high my friends and i were in Ralph's across the street from school we noticed on one of the aisles the little sign over it that tells you what is on the aisle said catsup ok whatever no problem but on the other side of the sign it said ketchup so that started a debate! what was the correct spelling of the word??

so today i was reading my nutrition book and in one place it spells it one way and another place it spells it a different way if you look on bottles some spell it one way others spell it the other so what's the difference they all taste pretty much the same

so i thought this would be a great thing to look up so i did!

after tons and tons of websites i have found nothing! all i found was that it is merely a difference in spelling so crazy! i guess some countries spell it one way while others spell it another way so i guess my answer will never truly be answered!
So when i tried to spell check this it turned up Catsup is spelled wrong what the heck how does this make any sense???

but while researching all of this i found some other random stuff like google images ketchup art there are some crazy pictures there or watermelon carvings oh my gosh crazy!

oh and did you know that 60% of Americans eat out for lunch at least once a week and 25% of Americans eat out for lunch 5 or more days a week! crazy huh??

Marriage

OK so totally random topic for me to talk about but it was what we were learning about in class and i found it very interesting!

why do most people that do not have some kind of religious reasons get married?

marriage is the only legally binding agreement that has to be entered into and exited from through the government. Think about it! In order to get married or to get divorced you have to go through the government. why? why does the government view marriage as such a huge thing?? because it is?

although i don't understand why people living of the world get married today? usually they are already living together, alot of times they have bank accounts together and share the bills, sometimes they have kids together so what is a good reason to get married? they are already in a marriageish relationship without the legal commitment of marriage?

it was very interesting for me to hear my class and my teachers view on marriage and what marriage is. Of course the teacher basically went with the books definition but she also added some of her own thoughts to it! she used to be a marriage counselor.

The Definition my teacher and the book give for marriage is an emotional and legal commitment of 2 people who share emotional and physical intimacy, various tasks, and economic resources.

Here are some advantages according to my teacher on marriage:

Live Longer
Healthier life style
greater happiness
more satisfying sex life
career advantages
and accumulate wealth

78% of people get married, 84% of Christians get married

50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce

and by the way the statistics on christian divorces are about the same crazy!!!

Why did God create Eve?

OK so i know that she wrote this because she thinks that i am being stubborn and i found it really funny that she asked this! i love you Nina!

Genesis 2:

Assassination vs. Murder

I have been wondering for a while what's the difference between Assassination and murder
Usually you hear assassination associated with politiacal leaders and things like that but sometimes i hear it about random people to so what's the difference?

Murder according to the dictionary: to kill (a human being) unlawfully and with premeditated malice

Assassination according to the dictionary: to injure or destroy unexpectedly and treacherously; to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons

Oxford English Dictionary says assassination is:
The action of assassinating; the taking the life of any one by treacherous violence, esp. by a hired emissary, or one who has taken upon him to execute the deed

So Assassination is murder but of someone usually in a public position but it can also be when someone is hired to kill someone else

basically that's it!

What makes your stomach growl??

Sera recently asked me this one and i have always wondered it and never knew so i thought hey I'll look it up!

borborygmi is the word for the sound that it makes which is an onomatopoeia (meaning the word sounds like what sound it makes) if you follow the link you can hear the pronunciation of the word!

It happens when your stomach walls squeeze together in an attempt to mix and digest food and there's no food there. Gases and digestive juices slosh around in your empty stomach and make this sound!
It doesn't only happen when you are hungry though. It is a normal part of digestion especially if your stomach is not digesting the food right! also a lot of times you do not feel it or hear it when your stomach has food it in!

Basically Your stomach is constantly digesting and if there is nothing in their to digest you hear the sound of it sloshing around the digestive juices and such to try and digest things!
